Walk and Pray With Kids-Tips and Tools

Walk and Pray with Your Kids-Tips and Tools

The summertime is a great opportunity for you to teach your children to pray in a more active way by going outside on family prayer walks through your neighborhood. Here are a few tips to guide your children.
1. Be clear about the goal. This is the time to teach your children how to pray in an engaging way. Secondary benefits such as family conversation can result. The goal of prayer walking is to teach your child to pray.
2. Have a realistic expectation of your children taking into account their age, attention span and willingness to pray out loud.

As you prayer walk together allow the wonders of God’s creation to lead you to praise and thank Him.
a. Ask your children, “What sounds do you hear? If they hear birds singing, praise God for the beauty of birds and their ability to sing.
b. If your child notices a pretty flower say, “Let’s thank God for making flowers”.

Pay attention to the people you see and offer simple prayers for neighbors as you walk past their homes.
a. Jointly ask God to bring your child’s friend to know Jesus.
b. Invite your children to pray specifically and by name:”Please heal Mrs. Brown from cancer”.
c.Ask the Holy Spirit to show your family how to pray for a neighborhood-then pray in faith!

When you prayer walk together, your children will learn to pray by hearing you pray. Keep it fun and praise God for any growth you witness.

Empower Kids With Child Prayer Tools

Parents, adults, and the church must provide our children an opportunity to learn and practice prayer in an encouraging environment. Children need guidance in all areas of growing up- including prayer. Training our children to pray complies with the directive to “train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6. Parents and the church must nurture our children’s prayer life by involving them in prayer at home and in your church’s prayer life.

Parents and those leaders in the church must encourage praying in an encouraging safe environment and provide kids with child prayer tools for kids to help them learn to pray effectively. Adults must pray before their children and pray with them. Listed below are four of seven foundational aspects of prayer to teach children so that kids can develop a healthy prayer life:

1. Remember prayer is a relationship with God* . Children lack the sophistication that comes from praying around spiritual “pros”. Their innocent prayers often make us smile. But that’s the way we want them to pray- naturally and in relationship with the Father. We want them to grow up with a simple approach to conversation with God.

2. Teach God’s Attributes. It’s not nearly as important to teach children the mechanics of prayer as it is to help them know to whom they are praying. God is love. He is holy He is compassionate. He is powerful. The more children under who God is, the more intimately and confidently they can pray.

3. Use the Bible when you pray. An important way to mature children’s prayer lives is to help them to build a prayer vocabulary by teaching them to pray Scripture. Using Scripture to formulate prayers opens up a whole new way of talking to God-new words, concepts and subjects to pray about.

4. Show that God responds to simple faith. One of the best ways to instill faith in children is to share with them about God’s faithfulness. When parents, teachers and church workers tell kids their most memorable faith stories, to kids it usually isn’t long before the children start having faith stories of their own.
